Symposium: Magmatism and Petroleum Systems

“The challenge of understanding its impact on hydrocarbon basin”

The last years of research work have brought to light the importance of magmatic processes in the modification of the elements and processes on petroleum systems, with both positive and negative effects. Due to its complexity, these effects need to be better understood, therefore, it is extremely important that we have - through this Symposium- the opportunity to create a space for debate to understand these processes.

Along with the technological and scientific advances, the academic - scientific community further integrates with the oil and gas industry, helping a better understanding of the topics in question.

The purpose of this symposium is to hierarchically organize the influence of magmatic processes in the modification of petroleum systems in order to extend the exploration boundaries to igneous environments, reduce the exploration risks and increase the efficiency of these types of reservoirs.

Subthemes:

  • Magmatism and source rock:
  • Thermal effects and maturation
  • Volcanis environments and prolifeours source rocks
(e.g: anoxic conditions, nutrients supply, etc.)
  • Magmatism and reservoirs:
  • Properties of igneous rocks as reservoirs: types of rocks and quality (petrology, geochemistry, petrophysics, rocks mechanics, etc.)
  • Architecture of volcanic and volcaniclastic deposits
  • Alteration of reservoirs by metamorphism, hydrothermalism, fracturing
  • Reserves calculation

  • Magmatism and migration, seal and traps:
  • Migration through hidrothermalism
  • Migration through fracture zones (seal bypass systems)
  • Trap formation
  • Igneous rocks as seals
  • Trap breaking and re-migration of fluids
  • New trapping of fluids, degradation and loss
  • Influence in the fluids present in a trap (e.g.: presence of CO2)

  • Methodologies of study:
  • Identification of igneous rocks in logs and borehole images
  • Identification and definition of igenous rocks poperties in seismic
  • Datings
